BLK Revenue
As a value investing shop, we are interested in seeing how BLK’s revenues measure up against past performances. One easily understandable way of doing that is to compare Price to Sales per share levels over a given time frame. Assuming it is available, Ockham prefers to look at ten years of history (for this stock there are 10 years of history available) and we weigh recent years more heavily. This allows us to find weighted average historical high and low Price to Sales ratios, which give us a better idea of the stock’s current underlying value. Using this method, we have established a high range for Price to Sales of 6.94x and the low end of the range at 3.93x.
With respect to these historically rational metrics, notice that the current Price to Sales per share ratio for BLK of 2.78x is well below its normal historic Price to Sales levels. At a price of $206.93, BLK is 49% below where we would expect to see it. Clearly, this stock looks undervalued compared to historical levels, at least on a Price to Sales basis. This will positively affect our analysis because it is rare to find a stock this far below historical norms, and we would expect some price appreciation to bring this metric back towards a more normal range.
BLK Cash Earnings
Looking at BLK specifically in their Cash Earnings capabilities, Ockham views BLK as significantly below its historical average multiple of cash earnings as calculated by Ockham. Similar to our analysis of sales per share, Ockham looks at the last 10 years of cash earnings levels for BLK to identify where the current high and low price levels have been historically in relation to profit per share. Again, we utilize a weighted average methodology which relies more heavily on recent years of data. This weighted average framework provides us with an average high Price to Cash Earnings ratio per share of 38.54 and a 21.79 low over the same period.
Now that BLK’s current price is $206.93 and its Price to Cash Earnings ratio is 19.14, we are very positive on its outlook from the cash earnings perspective. In fact, BLK is now trading a full 37% below its average historical Price to Cash Earnings ratio at these profit per share levels. When our clients ask us why BLK has great long term potential, the Cash Earnings levels to current stock is one of our primary reasons. But naturally, now we need for the overall market to recognize this disparity.
BLK Dividends
When determining a company’s future prospects for success, Ockham Research sees analysis of dividend payments as a key additional factor. Even though it isn’t imperative for BLK to shell out a dividend in order to receive a positive rating, it can be helpful to further our analysis.
The estimated annual dividend for BLK is $3.12 producing a current dividend yield of 1.51%. Much like our evaluation of Sales and Cash Earnings per share, we review dividend yields from BLK against the historic high and low levels over all available dividend history. Because dividends are a decision made exclusively by management, we view a healthy and rising dividend as a sign of confidence and strength. The highest dividend yield from BLK over previous years was 3.51% while the lowest dividend yield was 0.00%. Given this range, the current dividend yield for BLK is below its historical median and not terribly attractive from this perspective.

“…Investors and analysts are clamoring for someone outside. They don’t think those six have the chops so to speak. I will tell you, I spoke with larry fink recently. I asked him if he wanted the he said no way. He’s running a big firm. BLACKROCK is the biggest money management firm. If they went to him, I wonder if he would say no. Remember, larry wanted to run he went up for that job. In my book I talk about that, this sort of process of picking john thain who eventually became the ceo. At one point fipgnk was actually promised the job right before they gave it to thain. All but promised, and then they gave it to thain. Which was an interesting turn of events for larry. It went from a cottage industry in the 1970s to a major now we are trying to be restabilized. Lots have happened. I think the most important trend is globalization. A steady scenario for much of the day today. Now at 9,560 on the blue chip check the nasdaq and we are seeing losses. Substantial actually on the nasdaq, given the big run-up in technology year-to-date. The nasdaq chart, a decline better than 50 points on the 52 points lower on the nasdaq, 2.5% on the day. …” – BLK on Closing Bell

Since assets in such funds reached an all-time high at $3.849 trillion in early …” – BLK on WSJ Marketbeat
