Investors are confronting what appears to be a synchronous global bear market which has left virtually no asset class unscathed. While such a situation stokes worries about deflation-an economic phenomenon generally associated with depressions-we believe that U.S. large cap stocks will benefit in the years ahead from this situation. Investors should be ready to put money to work in the months ahead should share prices continue to fall.

Lowe’s Cos. Inc. reported a 7.9% drop in second quarter earnings this morning, but it still beat Wall Street’s muted expectations. The N.C.-based home-improvement retailer turned in a reasonable performance given the dismal housing market and sluggish economy. Lowe’s shares have reached a valuation that patient investors might find compelling when normalized conditions return to the housing market and the overall economy.

Lowe’s Companies (LOW), the second largest home improvement retailer, experienced a tough first quarter. Profits fell 18%, triggered by a weak housing market, slowing consumer spending and fuel and food inflation. All of these factors contributed to weaker than expected numbers and Lowe’s management lowered already-conservative earnings guidance for the full year by about 20%. […]
