The earnings season has picked up speed and much of the results have been disappointing, but there are some bright spots if you are paying attention. In these days were everything seems to be doom and gloom, we thought it would be a great time to highlight some campanies that are doing the right things in these challenging times.

Apple reported excellent numbers last week and the market is responding positively. Ockham Research rates Apple as Greatly Undervalued and we think that earnings momentum and sales momentum are just to hard to ignore.

This post references a great article by Fortune magazine that demonstrates how Wall Street analysts come up short against many unpaid blogger analysts in predicting Apple’s earnings yesterday. Also, it is a proven fact that many Wall Street analysts have a history of changing ratings ex post in order to make them look better. Perhaps it is time to change the way we look at equity research, and not get too caught up in Wall Street analysts because often times they are flat wrong.

Microsoft is launching a new ad campaign featuring spots with Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates. Apple has benefited from tremendously successful ads slamming Vista as an inferior product. The fact remains that Microsoft still dominates the space and we think there stock has not benefited enough from it of late.

A Citi analyst has doubled his estimate for Amazon.com’s Kindle device. We are less enthusiastic about the digital reader, and we are certainly not buyers of AMZN after the significant price appreciation of the day.

Cell phones are increasingly taking a dominant position over landlines in the telecommunications industry. AT&T was able to match estimates for the quarter, but the brightest times are still ahead.
