The financial press is beating its “depression” drums just a bit harder this afternoon in the wake of Congress’ surprise rejection of its bailout legislation and the market’s strong drop. However, we remain skeptical that this behemoth bill would indeed be the market’s short term salvation. Market forces, patience and a committment to legitimate capitalist principals, not more government interference, will probably do more to turn around a bad situation.

Research in Motion has had one heck of a day, dropping more than 27% after a disappointing earnings release. We are starting to like the posibilities that are represented by this growth story that all of a sudden is attractively priced.

SunTrust looks a little bit expensive based on the Ockham methodology, and we are expecting a little bit of a pull back on slipping earnings. Even though STI pays a great dividend that looks relatively safe, now is not the right time to invest as the credit crisis may soon expand from Wall St. to Main St.

Warren Buffett has thrown his chips in and he is betting on the Goldman Sachs to reemerge as a leader in the financial sector. With assistance from the government’s rescue plan, Buffett hopes that Goldman’s proven management can once again restore the confidence that is so lacking in financials right now.

Okham Research views Kraft Food (KFT) shares as fully valued at present. However, this newest member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) represents a defensive component of the economy (Consumer Goods), has broad international exposure, pays a 3.3% dividend and has a market cap close to $50 billion. As such, income-oriented investors looking for a safe harbor in this rocky market might consider Kraft Foods shares for their portfolio.
