SAFM Revenue
For a long time, value investors have used the current share price relative to sales per share levels as an important valuation tool. We utilize a historical weighted average methodology that treats recent years more importantly in the calculation. When looking at SAFM through this framework, we can see that our weighted average historical high and low Price to Sales per share ratios over the last 10 years are 0.74x and 0.36x respectively.
Utilizing this range we can see that SAFM’s current Price to Sales per share ratio of 0.55x is slightly under its historical average. This level of Price to Sales gives us a fairly neutral position on the SAFM shares. We would like to see a drop in the Price to Sales ratio just a little bit more (given current sales figures) before we would become more positive on a Price to Sales basis. Such a drop would increase the attractiveness of the stock but, as always, would need to be considered in the context of all other valuation factors.
SAFM Cash Earnings
Looking at SAFM specifically in their Cash Earnings capabilities, Ockham views SAFM as significantly below its historical average multiple of Cash Earnings. Looking at the last 10 years we can get a good understanding of what investors have grown to expect from SAFM. For example, SAFM's Cash Earnings ratio per share has fluctuated between 6.87 and 13.11 over this historical timeframe. This range is based upon a proprietary weighted methodology at Ockham, but can clearly show an investor where SAFM is with respect to prior business periods.
Now that SAFM’s current price is $47.99 and its Price to Cash Earnings ratio is 7.44, we are very positive on its outlook from the cash earnings perspective. In fact, SAFM is now trading a full 26% below its average historical Price to Cash Earnings ratio at these profit per share levels. When our clients ask us why SAFM has great long term potential, the Cash Earnings levels to current stock is one of our primary reasons. But naturally, now we need for the overall market to recognize this disparity.
SAFM Dividends
While it is not necessary to pay an attractive dividend or a dividend at all, to receive a positive rating from Ockham, we view dividends as an additionally helpful measure in determining the future potential of any company.
In SAFM’s case, the estimated annual dividend is $0.60 resulting in a current dividend yield of 1.25%. Similar to our review of Sales and Cash Earnings per share, we evaluate dividend yields from SAFM against the historic high and low levels over the past 10 years. The highest dividend yield from SAFM over this period was 5.55% while the lowest dividend yield was 0.85% With that range in mind, SAFM’s current dividend yield is a full 60.94% below its median dividend yield historically. This is a negative from our perspective.
